RedMountain & PageCXVI

Our friends Tifah, Reid, and Dann have released (under the name of Page CXVI) their third in a series of hymns albums. It is good. Very good. Their arrangement of Be Still My Soul has become a regular in our home and the other songs both echo the hymns sung in my youth but bring an interpretation of these texts which makes the old seem new and affective. They have chosen to adapt fairly popular hymns rather than lesser known ones, but their arrangements effectively make the familiar seem just unfamiliar enough.

Red Mountain Music has released their final collection of hymns. It is stunning, haunting, and by far their best recording. It declares war on the shallow banality that passes for worship music in many quarters by pulling us into the pain and tension that the narrative of the gospel plants us in. The Light seems rich but still full of the tension of our present, the dark, while real, points out towards hope. All of their albums have done this effectively- but this record does it better.
